Course Overview
This advanced veterinary maxillofacial surgery course is designed for veterinarians seeking practical, clinically applicable training in the diagnosis and treatment of maxillofacial fractures in small animals. Through a structured, step-by-step approach, the course guides participants from accurate fracture diagnosis to both minimally invasive and advanced surgical repair techniques.
Maxillofacial trauma is a frequent and challenging presentation in veterinary practice, often involving complex anatomical structures and requiring precise decision-making. This course provides a comprehensive framework for managing mandibular, maxillary, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and orbital-zygomatic fractures, with a strong emphasis on improving clinical outcomes while minimizing complications.
Participants will gain in-depth understanding of clinical examination and diagnostic imaging for maxillofacial injuries, followed by detailed instruction on fracture stabilization and surgical repair. Both non-invasive fixation methods and advanced osteosynthesis techniques are covered to ensure versatility in real-world cases.
· Accurately diagnose maxillofacial fractures using clinical examination and imaging
· Select appropriate treatment strategies for mandibular and maxillary fractures
· Master non-invasive fixation techniques, including muzzle application, button technique, canine fixation, and intraoral splints
· Apply advanced surgical techniques such as locking plates, miniplates, titanium mesh, cerclage wiring, and external fixation
· Manage complex conditions involving the temporomandibular joint, including luxations, fractures, ankylosis, and feline TMJ disorders
· Understand minimally invasive approaches to reduce surgical trauma and postoperative complications
· Mandibular fractures: symphyseal, rostral, and complex fracture configurations
· Maxillary, palatal, and nasal fractures
· TMJ surgery, including updated feline condylectomy protocols for patients with limited mouth opening
· Orbital-zygomatic and zygomatic arch fractures
· Decision-making between conservative, minimally invasive, and surgical treatment options
