Course Overview
The Electrocardiography and Thoracic Radiology in Dogs and Cats course is the second module of the EAVSI Master Systemic Course for Cardiology in the Philippines, a structured veterinary cardiology training program designed to help small animal practitioners develop practical diagnostic skills for cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory diseases.
This intensive 4-day course focuses on two of the most important diagnostic tools in veterinary cardiology: electrocardiography (ECG) and thoracic radiology. Through a combination of lectures, guided image interpretation, practical workshops, and clinical case discussions, participants will learn a systematic approach to evaluating canine and feline cardiac patients.
Key Learning Objectives
Participants will learn how to:
Perform and interpret ECGs in dogs and cats using a structured diagnostic approach.
Recognize normal ECG findings and identify clinically significant arrhythmias.
Understand supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, conduction disturbances, and emergency ECG assessment.
Apply Holter monitoring and ambulatory ECG techniques in clinical practice.
Interpret thoracic radiographs for cardiac and respiratory diseases.
Assess cardiac silhouette size, shape, and chamber enlargement.
Identify radiographic signs of congestive heart failure.
Differentiate pulmonary, pleural, vascular, and mediastinal abnormalities.
Integrate ECG and thoracic radiology findings to improve clinical decision-making.
Curriculum
Day 1 - Electrocardiography I-Foundations, acquisition and systematic ECG interpretation
● Electrical physiology and genesis of the ECG
● ECG acquisition: leads, positioning, paper speed, sensitivity and artefacts
● Systematic ECG interpretation: rate, rhythm, axis and waveform morphology
● Normal rhythms, sinus arrhythmia and ECG findings that should not be overcalled
Day 2 - Electrocardiography II-Arrhythmias, Holter monitoring and emergency ECG decision-making
● Supraventricular arrhythmias
● Ventricular arrhythmias and malignant rhythm recognition
● Bradyarrhythmias, AV block, bundle branch block and fascicular block
● Holter monitoring, ambulatory ECG and ECG-based emergency decision-making
Day 3 - Thoracic Radiology I-Technique, normal anatomy and cardiac assessment
● Thoracic radiographic technique and positioning
● Normal thoracic anatomy and structured interpretation
● Cardiac silhouette assessment: size, shape and chamber enlargement
● Radiographic signs of congestive heart failure
Day 4 - Thoracic Radiology II-Pulmonary, pleural, vascular and integrated cardiorespiratory diagnosis
● Pulmonary patterns I: bronchial, interstitial and alveolar patterns
● Pulmonary patterns II: nodular, mixed and vascular patterns
● Pleural, mediastinal and thoracic wall disease
● Pulmonary vascular disease, pulmonary hypertension, thromboembolism and integrated case discussion

PROFESSIONAL PROFILE
Veterinary surgeon specialising in small-animal cardiology, with long-standing clinical, academic and scientific experience in cardiorespiratory medicine. Graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1997 and awarded a PhD in 2025 with the thesis “New diagnostic support techniques for myxomatous mitral valve disease in dogs”, graded Sobresaliente Cum Laude. AVEPA-accredited in Cardiology since 2014 and holder of the RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice since 2020.
CLINICAL AND ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
More than two decades of experience in small-animal clinical practice, with responsibility for cardiopulmonary/cardiorespiratory departments in referral veterinary hospitals in Valencia, Denia and Calpe. Former lecturer in Medical Pathology and Nutrition at Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera, with extensive undergraduate clinical teaching activity, and Director of a five-month postgraduate Master’s programme in Veterinary Cardiology at I-VET.
RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS AND EDITORIAL ACTIVITY
Research interests include canine myxomatous mitral valve disease, echocardiographic indices, quality-of-life assessment, machine learning applied to cardiology, feline cardiomyopathies and emergency cardiorespiratory medicine. Author or co-author of peer-reviewed papers, professional review articles, textbooks and book chapters, including recent publications in Veterinary Research Communications, Veterinary Sciences, Pets, Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, AJVR and Topics in Companion Animal Medicine. Co-author/editor of Manual de protocolos de urgencias and Manual del ATV, and contributor to several cardiology, feline medicine and respiratory medicine textbooks.
