Course Overview
The EAVSI Master Systemic Course for Cardiology – Module 3 provides veterinarians with a solid foundation in cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and clinical examination. Through case-based lectures and practical discussions, participants will learn how cardiovascular function changes in health and disease and how to apply this knowledge to everyday clinical practice.
Topics include cardiac physiology, neurohormonal regulation, cardiac remodeling, clinical examination, auscultation, diagnostic approaches to common cardiac presentations, thoracic radiography, T-FAST assessment, and ECG interpretation.
Key Learning Topics
Cardiovascular physiology and hemodynamics
Neurohormonal mechanisms in heart failure
Cardiac anatomy, function, and pressure-volume loops
Cardiac remodeling and disease progression
Clinical examination of cardiac patients
Cardiac and pulmonary auscultation
Diagnostic approach to cough, syncope, tachypnea, and dyspnea
Thoracic radiography in cardiology
T-FAST examination techniques
ECG interpretation and clinical case discussions
Who Should Attend?
This module is designed for veterinarians seeking to strengthen their understanding of small animal cardiology, improve diagnostic skills, and build a stronger foundation for managing cardiac patients.
What You Will Gain
By the end of the course, participants will have a better understanding of cardiovascular function and disease, along with practical skills in clinical examination, diagnostic imaging interpretation, point-of-care ultrasound assessment, and ECG analysis.
Curriculum
Day 1
l Preload, afterload, contractility, autonomic nervous system, baroreceptors, and cardiovascular reflexes (with illustrative clinical cases).
l Neurohormonal systems in healthy subjects and during heart failure (with illustrative clinical cases, as well as therapeutic and prognostic considerations).
Day 2
l Cardiac cycle, ventricular anatomy and function, left atrial anatomy and function, and pressure-volume loops (with illustrative clinical cases).
l Cardiac remodeling and dysfunction in different cardiac and extracardiac diseases (with illustrative clinical cases).
Day 3
l History taking and clinical examination of the cardiac patient; auscultation of cardiac and pulmonary sounds.
l Diagnostic approach to cough and transient loss of consciousness for cardiologists (with illustrative clinical cases).
Day 4
l Thoracic radiography for cardiologists: image acquisition, recognition of anatomical structures, radiographic measurements, and assessment of radiographic patterns in cardiac patients (with illustrative clinical cases).
l Alternative diagnostic approach to tachypneic/dyspneic patients using T-FAST: examination technique and assessment of ultrasonographic patterns in cardiac patients (with illustrative clinical cases).
l Practical Session on selected ECG tracings with clinical cases discussion
